Samuel Maran
Samuel Maran joined the faculty at Lake as Director of Bands in 2019. He is responsible for all band activities 5th-12th grade including Concert Bands, Marching Band, Small Ensembles, and Pep Band.
Mr. Maran received his bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Toledo where he studied conducting with Dr. Jason Stumbo and trombone with Dr. Dan Harris of the Toledo Symphony. While at UT, he performed with the University Wind Ensemble, University Orchestra, and University Symphonic Band where he sat first chair for 4 of his 5 years. While at UT, he also enjoyed time playing bass in the Pep Band, was a member of the University's drumline, and played trombone in the Jazz Band. Mr. Maran was also a rechartering member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a music fraternity. During his time with PMA, he held the offices of President, Vice President, and Fraternal Education Officer.
Mr. Maran began teaching part-time during his years in college with St. Francis De Sales High School and Whitmer High School. There he helped direct the Marching and Pep Band at both schools. While continuing his education, he was also an avid performer. Mr. Maran has played with a jazz combo, numerous small ensembles, and the Perrysburg Symphony where he was 2nd chair.
After college, Mr. Maran was hired with 5 schools part-time. He worked with St. Francis, Whitmer, The University of Toledo, All Saints Catholic Church, and Trinity Lutheran School. He helped run the marching and pep band with St. Francis, pep band with Whitmer, conducted the Symphonic Band at UT, and directed the Middle School programs for All Saints and Trinity Lutheran.
After that year, he was hired by Hilltop High School as Director of Bands. Over the course of 6 years with Hilltop, he grew the program to 4x its size and gained student recognition at OMEA sanctioned events such as Solo and Ensemble and District One Honors Band. After 6 years of reinvigorating music at Hilltop, Mr. Maran found work with Lake Local Schools and began his journey as a Flyer.
Currently, Mr. Maran is working on his Master’s Degree with Kent State University through their online schooling platform while teaching at Lake. He is a member of the Ohio Music Education Association and the National Association for Music Education.
Kathleen Jansen - Band Director Kathleen (Kathy) Jansen joined the faculty at Lake in 2008 as an elementary Music Specialist. She is currently co-band director for the Lake Middle School Band Director, and assistant band director for 8th grade and High School Bands. She added assistant marching band director to her duties in 2020-21 and is the announcer for the band during the halftime shows during football season.
Mrs. Jansen earned her Bachelor of Music and master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University. She performed with the BGSU orchestra as principal oboe as well as the Symphonic concert band. She spent several years performing with the Perrysburg symphony as principal oboe and also served on their Board of Directors. After leaving the Perrysburg Symphony, she was appointed principal oboe of the Monroe Community College Symphonic Band. She currently is an active musician and can be heard in many local pit orchestras throughout the Toledo area and Southeast Michigan.
While working on her teaching certification at the University of Toledo in 1994, Mrs. Jansen had the opportunity to audition for principal oboe with the 555th Air National Guard Band. She made it, survived basic training and is now a retired member of the Air Force. She would like to thank the Lake Schools for putting on such meaningful Veteran’s Day Programs every year.
Prior to joining Lake Local Schools, Mrs. Jansen worked as High School Band Director at Central Catholic School, then Music Specialist for the Toledo Public Schools, and Oregon City Schools also as Elementary Music Specialist. She had a boys choir and a girls choir which were featured on Channel 13 WTVG Sound of the Seasons segment.
Before her teacher training at the University of Toledo she worked in retail, banking, credit manager for a Fortune 500 company and as a real estate agent, before returning to teach music which has been her lifelong passion.
Sharri Bandeen – Majorette & Color Guard Director
Sharri joined Lake High School’s marching band staff in the early 2000s. She was born and raised in Montpelier, Ohio, graduating from Montpelier High School a long time ago. She attended The University of Toledo where she earned degrees in marketing and management. Sharri has been involved in baton twirling most of her life, both as a competitor and with the MHS and UT marching bands. She received state and national titles as a competitive baton twirler.
Upon retirement from competitive and performance baton twirling, Sharri transitioned into coaching and judging. She is a licensed baton twirling judge and teacher and has coached students from age 3-22 as rec twirlers, majorettes, college twirlers, and competitive individuals/teams.
Sharri is the Ministry Support Supervisor at Mainstreet Church in Moline. She is married and has one son, Jake, who lives in Wisconsin and a very special puggle fur baby, Annabella.
